Wa alaykum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. In Hanafi jurisprudence, Karahat refers to situations that are not haram (forbidden) but are discouraged or undesirable to perform. It is a status between haram and halal, where refraining from the act is considered more virtuous. Karahat is divided into two categories: 1. Karahat al-Tahrimiyya: This refers to acts that are close to haram, and their avoidance is strictly required. Committing such an act incurs sin similar to haram, but because the evidence is not definitive (qat'i), it is classified as tahrimiyya. Examples include fasting on Eid days. 2. Karahat al-Tanzihiyya: This refers to acts that are far from haram and are not sinful to perform, but it is more virtuous to avoid them. Examples include performing voluntary prayers at certain times. References from Hanafi sources: Al-Mabsut by Imam al-Sarakhsi, Al-Hidayah by al-Marghinani, and Radd al-Muhtar (Hashiyat Ibn Abidin) provide detailed explanations of these categories. While the term 'karahat' is not explicitly used in the Quran, the concept is derived from the Sunnah and the scholars' interpretation of divine guidance. Regarding jurisprudential differences, while other schools have similar concepts, the distinction between tahrimiyya and tanzihiyya is particularly prominent and systematic in the Hanafi school.
