1

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا اَ۬لۡمُدَّثِّرُ

Oh you, wrapped up (in a cloak)

2

قُمۡ فَأَنذِرۡ

Get up and warn (people)

3

وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرۡ

And announce that your Lord is the Greatest

4

وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرۡ

Cleanse and keep your clothes purified

5

وَاَلرِّجۡزَ فَاَهۡجُرۡ

And keep clear away from filth

6

وَلَا تَمۡنُن تَسۡتَكۡثِرُ

Do not seek worldly gains (in return) for favors done

7

وَلِرَبِّكَ فَاَصۡبِرۡ

Endure (adversity) with patience, for the sake of your Lord

8

فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِي اِ۬لنَّاقُورِ

(Warn everyone that) the day the trumpet sounds

9

فَذَٰلِكَ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ يَوۡمٌ عَسِيرٌ

Would truly be a long hard day

10

عَلَى اَ۬لۡكٰ۪فِرِينَ غَيۡرُ يَسِيرࣲ‏

Not at all an easy day for the unbelievers

11

ذَرۡنِي وَمَنۡ خَلَقۡتُ وَحِيدࣰ ا

So, let Me handle the one whom I created all alone

12

وَجَعَلۡتُ لَهُۥ مَالࣰ ا مَّمۡدُودࣰ ا

And, I granted him wealth (and resources) in abundance

13

وَبَنِينَ شُهُودࣰ ا

And sons to stand by him

14

وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمۡهِيدࣰ ا

I made life comfortable and easy for him

15

ثُمَّ يَطۡمَعُ أَنۡ أَزِيدَ

Yet, he (greedily) desires that I should grant him still more

16

كَلَّآۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِأٓيَٰتِنَا عَنِيدࣰ ا

Of course not! Indeed, he was obstinate (and ardent) in opposing Our verses

17

سَأُرۡهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا

Soon, I will impose a dreadful torment upon him

18

إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ

Indeed, he pondered and plotted

19

فَقُتِلَ كَيۡفَ قَدَّرَ

Cursed is he, the plot he hatched

20

ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيۡفَ قَدَّرَ

Once again, damned is he! What a plot he hatched

21

ثُمَّ نَظَرَ

Then, he looked around (haughtily)

22

ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ

Frowned, and signaled his displeasure

23

ثُمَّ أَدۡبَرَ وَاَسۡتَكۡبَرَ

Finally, he turned back and displayed arrogance

24

فَقَالَ إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحۡرࣱ يُؤۡثَرُ

Then said, "It is nothing but (the same old) magic handed down from antiquity

25

إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوۡلُ اُ۬لۡبَشَرِ

It, (the Qur´an), is merely the word of a mortal

26

سَأُصۡلِيهِ سَقَرَ

Soon, I will fling him (and roast him) in that scorcher _ (the hell)

27

وَمَآ أَدۡر۪ىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ

And what do you think the scorcher is

28

لَا تُبۡقِي وَلَا تَذَرُ

It would not spare (anything or anyone), nor would it leave them alone (by finishing them off)

29

لَوَّاحَةࣱ لِّلۡبَشَرِ

It will (scorch and) shrivel the human flesh

30

عَلَيۡهَا تِسۡعَةَ عَشَرَ

And over that (scorcher) are nineteen (angels standing guard)

31

۞وَمَا جَعَلۡنَآ أَصۡحَٰبَ اَ۬لنّ۪ارِ إِلَّا مَلَٰٓئِكَةࣰۖ وَمَا جَعَلۡنَا عِدَّتَهُمۡ إِلَّا فِتۡنَةࣰ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لِيَسۡتَيۡقِنَ اَ۬لَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ اُ۬لۡكِتَٰبَ وَيَزۡدَادَ اَ۬لَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِيمَٰنࣰ ا وَلَا يَرۡتَابَ اَ۬لَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ اُ۬لۡكِتَٰبَ وَاَلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ وَلِيَقُولَ اَ۬لَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضࣱ وَاَلۡكَٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ اَ۬للَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلࣰ اۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ اُ۬للَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهۡدِي مَن يَشَآءُۚ وَمَا يَعۡلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ وَمَا هِيَ إِلَّا ذِكۡر۪يٰ لِلۡبَشَرِ

We have chosen to appoint the angels as wardens over hell, and We let their number be a trial for the unbelievers. So that, those given the scriptures may believe, and the believers may increase in their belief. Both _ those given the scriptures and the believers _ may not entertain doubts. Yet, those with disease in their hearts, and the unbelievers, would still say, "What does Allah mean by this example?" Thus, Allah leads astray whom He wants, and guides whom He wants. No one knows the forces of Allah except He. This is nothing but a reminder for the mortals

32

كَلَّا وَاَلۡقَمَرِ

No! (I) swear by the moon

33

وَاَلَّيۡلِ إِذَا دَبَرَ

The night, as it retreats

34

وَاَلصُّبۡحِ إِذَآ أَسۡفَرَ

And the dawn as it glows

35

إِنَّهَا لَإِحۡدَى اَ۬لۡكُبَرِ

Indeed, it (hell) is surely one of the mightiest (signs)

36

نَذِيرࣰ ا لِّلۡبَشَرِ

A warning for the mortals

37

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوۡ يَتَأَخَّرَ

(Now), anyone of you who wishes may proceed (towards excellence), or lag behind

38

كُلُّ نَفۡسِۢ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ رَهِينَةٌ

Every soul is (mortgaged and) held (as security) against the (evil) deeds it has wrought

39

إِلَّآ أَصۡحَٰبَ اَ۬لۡيَمِينِ

Except (the righteous ones), those on the right hand

40

فِي جَنَّٰتࣲ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ

(They would be) in the paradise; (and) they shall ask

41

عَنِ اِ۬لۡمُجۡرِمِينَ

The criminals

42

مَا سَلَكَكُمۡ فِي سَقَرَ

What has caused you to end up in this scorcher

43

قَالُواْ لَمۡ نَكُ مِنَ اَ۬لۡمُصَلِّينَ

They would reply, "We were not among those who established the ´salat´

44

وَلَمۡ نَكُ نُطۡعِمُ اُ۬لۡمِسۡكِينَ

Nor among those who fed (and cared for) the poor and the destitute

45

وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ اَ۬لۡخَآئِضِينَ

(Instead), we joined those who indulged in idle prattle (against the truth)

46

وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوۡمِ اِ۬لدِّينِ

And we denied the (coming of the) Day of Judgment

47

حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا اَ۬لۡيَقِينُ

Till the inevitable (death) came upon us

48

فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمۡ شَفَٰعَةُ اُ۬لشَّٰفِعِينَ

So, the intercession of the mediators did not help them at all

49

فَمَا لَهُمۡ عَنِ اِ۬لتَّذۡكِرَةِ مُعۡرِضِينَ

What is the matter with them? They are turning away from the reminder

50

كَأَنَّهُمۡ حُمُرࣱ مُّسۡتَنفِرَةࣱ‏

As if they were startled donkeys

51

فَرَّتۡ مِن قَسۡوَرَةِۢ

Running away from a lion

52

بَلۡ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ اُ۪مۡرِيࣲٕ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن يُؤۡتَىٰ صُحُفࣰ ا مُّنَشَّرَةࣰ‏

In fact, each one of them wants to be handed over his (very own customized) scriptures all spread out

53

كَلَّاۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ اَ۬لۡأٓخِرَةَ

Not ever! The fact is, they do not fear the afterlife

54

كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذۡكِرَةࣱ‏

No! In fact, this (Qur´an) is (just) an admonition

55

فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ

(Now) whoever wants, may heed (its warning)

56

وَمَا يَذۡكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ اَ۬للَّهُۚ هُوَ أَهۡلُ اُ۬لتَّقۡوٜ يٰ وَأَهۡلُ اُ۬لۡمَغۡفِرَةِ

But they will not heed unless Allah so wills. He is Worthy of being feared, and He is the One Who forgives
