Al-Hijr Suresi

الٓر۪ۚ تِلۡكَ ءَايَٰتُ اُ۬لۡكِتَٰبِ وَقُرۡءَانࣲ مُّبِينࣲ‏

Alif, Laam, Ra. These are the verses of the book, a clear lucid Qur´an

رُّبَّمَا يَوَدُّ اُ۬لَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لَوۡ كَانُواْ مُسۡلِمِينَ

There will come a time when the unbelievers would look back and yearn to have lived as obedient ones

ذَرۡهُمۡ يَأۡكُلُواْ وَيَتَمَتَّعُواْ وَيُلۡهِهِمِ اِ۬لۡأَمَلُۖ فَسَوۡفَ يَعۡلَمُونَ

So leave them alone. Let them eat and enjoy! Let their hopes distract and perplex them. They will soon come to know

وَمَآ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَرۡيَةٍ إِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابࣱ مَّعۡلُومࣱ‏

We never destroy any locality except in accordance with a preordained scheme and time-plan

مَّا تَسۡبِقُ مِنۡ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسۡتَـٔۡخِرُونَ

No generation shall hasten or delay the term fixed for it

وَقَالُواْ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا اَ۬لَّذِي نُزِّلَ عَلَيۡهِ اِ۬لذِّكۡرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجۡنُونࣱ‏

They (the unbelievers) said, "Oh you, upon whom this reminder is revealed! You are really insane

لَّوۡمَا تَأۡتِينَا بِالۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ اَ۬لصَّٰدِقِينَ

Wouldn´t you have come to us with angels, had you been truthful

مَا تَنَزَّلُ اُ۬لۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ إِلَّا بِالۡحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُوٓاْ إِذࣰ ا مُّنظَرِينَ

We dispatch the angels only with the final judgment. In that case, they would have no respite

إِنَّا نَحۡنُ نَزَّلۡنَا اَ۬لذِّكۡرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَٰفِظُونَ

Indeed it is We Who revealed this Qur´an, and of course We are its guardian

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ فِي شِيَعِ اِ۬لۡأَوَّلِينَ

Indeed, prior to you too, We sent (messengers) __ even to ancient tribes

وَمَا يَأۡتِيهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُواْ بِهِۦ يَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ

They mocked every messenger that ever came to them

كَذَٰلِكَ نَسۡلُكُهُۥ فِي قُلُوبِ اِ۬لۡمُجۡرِمِينَ

Thus We let this (mockery) pass through the hearts of the criminals

لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦ وَقَدۡ خَلَت سُّنَّةُ اُ۬لۡأَوَّلِينَ

They do not believe! This has been the tradition of their ancestors

وَلَوۡ فَتَحۡنَا عَلَيۡهِم بَابࣰ ا مِّنَ اَ۬لسَّمَآءِ فَظَلُّواْ فِيهِ يَعۡرُجُونَ

Even if We were to fling open a door in the sky, and they were actually climbing up through it

لَقَالُوٓاْ إِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتۡ أَبۡصَٰرُنَا بَلۡ نَحۡنُ قَوۡمࣱ مَّسۡحُورُونَ

They would say, "Our sights fail us, we are drugged. Rather, we are a nation bewitched

وَلَقَد جَّعَلۡنَا فِي اِ۬لسَّمَآءِ بُرُوجࣰ ا وَزَيَّنَّٰهَا لِلنَّٰظِرِينَ

And surely, We created fortified spheres in the sky, and for the viewers We decorated it

وَحَفِظۡنَٰهَا مِن كُلِّ شَيۡطَٰنࣲ رَّجِيمٍ

And We have secured it against every cursed Shaitan

إِلَّا مَنِ اِ۪سۡتَرَقَ اَ۬لسَّمۡعَ فَأَتۡبَعَهُۥ شِهَابࣱ مُّبِينࣱ‏

Occasionally, one of them eavesdrops, and a bright blazing meteor streaks after him

وَاَلۡأَرۡضَ مَدَدۡنَٰهَا وَأَلۡقَيۡنَا فِيهَا رَوَٰسِيَ وَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ شَيۡءࣲ مَّوۡزُونࣲ‏

We spread out the land and pitched mountains on it, firm and immovable. In the land, We grew all kinds of things in a perfect balance

وَجَعَلۡنَا لَكُمۡ فِيهَا مَعَٰيِشَ وَمَن لَّسۡتُمۡ لَهُۥ بِرَٰزِقِينَ

Out of the land, We provide livelihood for you, and other creations, too. You are not their providers

وَإِن مِّن شَيۡءٍ إِلَّا عِندَنَا خَزَآئِنُهُۥ وَمَا نُنَزِّلُهُۥٓ إِلَّا بِقَدَرࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ‏

We have all things in infinite quantities. We mete them out in measured amounts

وَأَرۡسَلۡنَا اَ۬لرِّيَٰحَ لَوَٰقِحَ فَأَنزَلۡنَا مِنَ اَ۬لسَّمَآءِ مَآءࣰ فَأَسۡقَيۡنَٰكُمُوهُ وَمَآ أَنتُمۡ لَهُۥ بِخَٰزِنِينَ

We circulate the winds full of moisture. We send rain down from the sky, and We have you drink that water. You could not hold that (much water) in reservoirs

وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ نُحۡيِۦ وَنُمِيتُ وَنَحۡنُ اُ۬لۡوَٰرِثُونَ

We, indeed, grant life as well as death! And We are the (ultimate) Receiver and Inheritor

وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمۡنَا اَ۬لۡمُسۡتَقۡدِمِينَ مِنكُمۡ وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمۡنَا اَ۬لۡمُسۡتَـٔۡخِرِينَ

We surely know those who have gone by before you, just as We know those who have yet to come

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحۡشُرُهُمۡۚ إِنَّهُۥ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمࣱ‏

Your Lord will, indeed, gather them all. Verily, He is the Wisest and all-Knowing

۞وَلَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا اَ۬لۡإِنسَٰنَ مِن صَلۡصَٰلࣲ مِّنۡ حَمَإࣲ مَّسۡنُونࣲ‏

Surely, We have molded the humans from the dried-out stinking clay

وَاَلۡجَآنَّ خَلَقۡنَٰهُ مِن قَبۡلُ مِن نّ۪ارِ اِ۬لسَّمُومِ

And We had earlier fashioned jinn from a hot sultry flame

وَإِذۡ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ إِنِّي خَٰلِقُۢ بَشَرࣰ ا مِّن صَلۡصَٰلࣲ مِّنۡ حَمَإࣲ مَّسۡنُونࣲ‏

Your Lord said to the angels, "I am going to bring a man into existence from the dried-out stinking clay

فَإِذَا سَوَّيۡتُهُۥ وَنَفَخۡتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِي فَقَعُواْ لَهُۥ سَٰجِدِينَ

When I put him in order and breathe my spirit into him, you must fall prostrate before him

فَسَجَدَ اَ۬لۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ كُلُّهُمۡ أَجۡمَعُونَ

The angels fell prostrate! All of them

إِلَّآ إِبۡلِيسَ أَبَىٰٓ أَن يَكُونَ مَعَ اَ۬لسَّٰجِدِينَ

Except Ibleees! He refused to be among those who fell prostrate

قَالَ يَٰٓإِبۡلِيسُ مَا لَكَ أَلَّا تَكُونَ مَعَ اَ۬لسَّٰجِدِينَ

(Allah) said, "Oh Iblees! What is the matter? Why did you not fall prostrate

قَالَ لَمۡ أَكُن لِّأَسۡجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقۡتَهُۥ مِن صَلۡصَٰلࣲ مِّنۡ حَمَإࣲ مَّسۡنُونࣲ‏

He said, "I am not the one to prostrate myself before a man! You have fashioned him from the dried-out stinking clay

قَالَ فَاَخۡرُجۡ مِنۡهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمࣱ‏

(Allah) said, "Get out of here! You, surely, are damned

وَإِنَّ عَلَيۡكَ اَ۬للَّعۡنَةَ إِلَىٰ يَوۡمِ اِ۬لدِّينِ

Curse will loom over you till the Day of Judgment

قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرۡنِيٓ إِلَىٰ يَوۡمِ يُبۡعَثُونَ

He (Iblees) said, "Oh my Lord, grant me a moratorium till the day You raise them again

قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ اَ۬لۡمُنظَرِينَ

(Allah) said, "you have been granted the stay

إِلَىٰ يَوۡمِ اِ۬لۡوَقۡتِ اِ۬لۡمَعۡلُومِ

Till that appointed day

قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَآ أَغۡوَيۡتَنِي لَأُزَيِّنَنَّ لَهُمۡ فِي اِ۬لۡأَرۡضِ وَلَأُغۡوِيَنَّهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِينَ

(Iblees) said, "My Lord, since You led me astray, I will definitely embellish the allure of this world for them. I will fascinate and entice them all away

إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنۡهُمُ اُ۬لۡمُخۡلِصِينَ

Except the sincere ones among Your servants

قَالَ هَٰذَا صِرَٰطٌ عَلَيَّ مُسۡتَقِيمٌ

(Allah) said, "This Qur´an is, indeed, the path straight towards Me

إِنَّ عِبَادِي لَيۡسَ لَكَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ سُلۡطَٰنٌ إِلَّا مَنِ اِ۪تَّبَعَكَ مِنَ اَ۬لۡغَاوِينَ

You shall have no hold over My servants except those who follow you and stray from the path

وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمَوۡعِدُهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِينَ

And verily, hell is the promised place for them all

لَهَا سَبۡعَةُ أَبۡوَٰبࣲ لِّكُلِّ بَابࣲ مِّنۡهُمۡ جُزۡءࣱ مَّقۡسُومٌ

It has seven gates, each for a different class of sinners

إِنَّ اَ۬لۡمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّٰتࣲ وَعُيُونٍ

The pious shall be in paradise, amid its fountains

اِ۟دۡخُلُوهَا بِسَلَٰمٍ ءَامِنِينَ

(They shall be told to) enter it in peace and security

وَنَزَعۡنَا مَا فِي صُدُورِهِم مِّنۡ غِلٍّ إِخۡوَٰنًا عَلَىٰ سُرُرࣲ مُّتَقَٰبِلِينَ

We will rid their hearts of the residual rancor and resentment. Seated on couches and facing each other, they will live there like brothers

لَا يَمَسُّهُمۡ فِيهَا نَصَبࣱ وَمَا هُم مِّنۡهَا بِمُخۡرَجِينَ

There, they will encounter no hardship, and they will never be asked to leave

نَبِّئۡ عِبَادِيَ أَنِّيَ أَنَا اَ۬لۡغَفُورُ اُ۬لرَّحِيمُ

(Oh Mohammed, SAW), inform My servants that I am the most Forgiving. Indeed, I am the most Kind

وَأَنَّ عَذَابِي هُوَ اَ۬لۡعَذَابُ اُ۬لۡأَلِيمُ

The punishment I inflict is really very painful

۞وَنَبِّئۡهُمۡ عَن ضَيۡفِ إِبۡرَٰهِيمَ

And inform them about Ibraheem´s guests

إِذ دَّخَلُواْ عَلَيۡهِ فَقَالُواْ سَلَٰمࣰ ا قَالَ إِنَّا مِنكُمۡ وَجِلُونَ

They came to him and said, "Peace!" He said, "We feel afraid of you

قَالُواْ لَا تَوۡجَلۡ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَٰمٍ عَلِيمࣲ‏

They said, "Don´t be afraid! In fact, we give you the good news of a son endowed with wisdom

قَالَ أَبَشَّرۡتُمُونِي عَلَىٰٓ أَن مَّسَّنِيَ اَ۬لۡكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُونَ

Do you give me this news even though I have attained an old age? What kind of good news is that

قَالُواْ بَشَّرۡنَٰكَ بِالۡحَقِّ فَلَا تَكُن مِّنَ اَ۬لۡقَٰنِطِينَ

They said, "We bring you this good news with certainty. So, do not be pessimistic

قَالَ وَمَن يَقۡنِطُ مِن رَّحۡمَةِ رَبِّهِۦٓ إِلَّا اَ۬لضَّآلُّونَ

He (Ibraheem) said, "Only the misguided abandon hope in the mercy of their Lord

قَالَ فَمَا خَطۡبُكُمۡ أَيُّهَا اَ۬لۡمُرۡسَلُونَ

Said, "What is your mission, Oh angels

قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّآ أُرۡسِلۡنَآ إِلَىٰ قَوۡمࣲ مُّجۡرِمِينَ

They said, "We have been dispatched towards a nation of criminals

إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطٍ إِنَّا لَمُنَجُّوهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِينَ

Other than the family of Loot. For, we will rescue them all

إِلَّا اَ۪مۡرَأَتَهُۥ قَدَّرۡنَآ إِنَّهَا لَمِنَ اَ۬لۡغَٰبِرِينَ

With the exception of his wife who, it is decreed, will be among those who shall lag behind

فَلَمَّا جَآ ءَالَ لُوطٍ اِ۬لۡمُرۡسَلُونَ

And when they came to visit the family of Loot

قَالَ إِنَّكُمۡ قَوۡمࣱ مُّنكَرُونَ

He (Loot) said, "You appear to be strangers here

قَالُواْ بَلۡ جِئۡنَٰكَ بِمَا كَانُواْ فِيهِ يَمۡتَرُونَ

They replied, "Rather, we come to accomplish that about which they were in doubt

وَأَتَيۡنَٰكَ بِالۡحَقِّ وَإِنَّا لَصَٰدِقُونَ

We bring you the infallible certainty! What we say is really the truth

فَأَسۡرِ بِأَهۡلِكَ بِقِطۡعࣲ مِّنَ اَ۬لَّيۡلِ وَاَتَّبِعۡ أَدۡبَٰرَهُمۡ وَلَا يَلۡتَفِتۡ مِنكُمۡ أَحَدࣱ وَاَمۡضُواْ حَيۡثُ تُؤۡمَرُونَ

Let your family slip away under the cover of darkness. You follow them closely and let none of you glance back! Continue on towards the directed spot

وَقَضَيۡنَآ إِلَيۡهِ ذَٰلِكَ اَ۬لۡأَمۡرَ أَنَّ دَابِرَ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ مَقۡطُوعࣱ مُّصۡبِحِينَ

We conveyed to him Our decision that by dawn those people will be completely annihilated

وَجَآ أَهۡلُ اُ۬لۡمَدِينَةِ يَسۡتَبۡشِرُونَ

The people of the town came (to Loot) rejoicing

قَالَ إِنَّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ ضَيۡفِي فَلَا تَفۡضَحُونِ

He said, "They are my guests. Do not disgrace me

وَاَتَّقُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ وَلَا تُخۡزُونِ

Fear Allah and do not humiliate me

قَالُوٓاْ أَوَلَمۡ نَنۡهَكَ عَنِ اِ۬لۡعَٰلَمِينَ

They said, "Did we not forbid you to stand up for the whole world

قَالَ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ بَنَاتِيٓ إِن كُنتُمۡ فَٰعِلِينَ

He said, "Here are my daughters. If you follow my advice

لَعَمۡرُكَ إِنَّهُمۡ لَفِي سَكۡرَتِهِمۡ يَعۡمَهُونَ

(I swear) upon your life, (oh Mohammed, SAW) they were intoxicated _ rampaging and out of control

فَأَخَذَتۡهُمُ اُ۬لصَّيۡحَةُ مُشۡرِقِينَ

So at the crack of dawn, a blast grabbed them

فَجَعَلۡنَا عَٰلِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمۡطَرۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ حِجَارَةࣰ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ

We flipped them upside down! We rained upon them stones made of baked clay

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَأٓيَٰتࣲ لِّلۡمُتَوَسِّمِينَ

Herein are the signs for those who scrutinize closely

وَإِنَّهَا لَبِسَبِيلࣲ مُّقِيمٍ

That town happens to be located along a main thoroughfare

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَأٓيَةࣰ لِّلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

In this are signs for the believers

وَإِن كَانَ أَصۡحَٰبُ اُ۬لۡأَيۡكَةِ لَظَٰلِمِينَ

And the people (living in the town) of ´Aika´ were evildoers

فَاَنتَقَمۡنَا مِنۡهُمۡ وَإِنَّهُمَا لَبِإِمَامࣲ مُّبِينࣲ‏

We breathed vengeance upon them. Those (two settlements) existed on the main travel routes

۞وَلَقَدۡ كَذَّبَ أَصۡحَٰبُ اُ۬لۡحِجۡرِ اِ۬لۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

The people of (the town) of ´Hijr´ too, had rejected the messengers

وَءَاتَيۡنَٰهُمۡ ءَايَٰتِنَا فَكَانُواْ عَنۡهَا مُعۡرِضِينَ

We sent the messengers with Our signs, but they ignored

وَكَانُواْ يَنۡحِتُونَ مِنَ اَ۬لۡجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا ءَامِنِينَ

They used to carve safe and secure homes in the mountains

فَأَخَذَتۡهُمُ اُ۬لصَّيۡحَةُ مُصۡبِحِينَ

A mighty blast grabbed them in the morning

فَمَآ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُواْ يَكۡسِبُونَ

None of what they used to gain and gather could offer them any security or protection

وَمَا خَلَقۡنَا اَ۬لسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَاَلۡأَرۡضَ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَآ إِلَّا بِالۡحَقِّۗ وَإِنَّ اَ۬لسَّاعَةَ لَأٓتِيَةࣱۖ فَاَصۡفَحِ اِ۬لصَّفۡحَ اَ۬لۡجَمِيلَ

We created the heavens and the earth, and all else in between, with a specific purpose! The hour (of Judgment) is sure to arrive! So, forgive and forget with grace

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ اَ۬لۡخَلَّٰقُ اُ۬لۡعَلِيمُ

Surely, your Lord is the Omniscient, the ingenious Creator

وَلَقَدۡ ءَاتَيۡنَٰكَ سَبۡعࣰ ا مِّنَ اَ۬لۡمَثَانِي وَاَلۡقُرۡءَانَ اَ۬لۡعَظِيمَ

We have bestowed seven verses upon you, (the Surah Fatiha), worthy of being recited repeatedly, and the Majestic Qur´an

لَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيۡنَيۡكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعۡنَا بِهِۦٓ أَزۡوَٰجࣰ ا مِّنۡهُمۡ وَلَا تَحۡزَنۡ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وَاَخۡفِضۡ جَنَاحَكَ لِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

Do not covet the temporary enjoyment We have bestowed upon certain groups of them. Do not grieve for them. Rather, be considerate to the believers

وَقُلۡ إِنِّيَ أَنَا اَ۬لنَّذِيرُ اُ۬لۡمُبِينُ

Tell them, "I am truly an obvious warner for you

كَمَآ أَنزَلۡنَا عَلَى اَ۬لۡمُقۡتَسِمِينَ

Like the one We sent to those who split into groups

اَ۬لَّذِينَ جَعَلُواْ اُ۬لۡقُرۡءَانَ عِضِينَ

Those who separated the Qur´an into fragments

فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسۡـَٔلَنَّهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِينَ

By your Lord! We will definitely call them all to accounts

عَمَّا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ

About what they used to do

فَاَصۡدَعۡ بِمَا تُؤۡمَرُ وَأَعۡرِضۡ عَنِ اِ۬لۡمُشۡرِكِينَ

So, proclaim as commanded, and ignore the idol worshippers

إِنَّا كَفَيۡنَٰكَ اَ۬لۡمُسۡتَهۡزِءِينَ

We are more than sufficient against those who scoff

اَ۬لَّذِينَ يَجۡعَلُونَ مَعَ اَ۬للَّهِ إِلَٰهًا ءَاخَرَۚ فَسَوۡفَ يَعۡلَمُونَ

Those assigning other gods besides Allah will soon come to know

وَلَقَدۡ نَعۡلَمُ أَنَّكَ يَضِيقُ صَدۡرُكَ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ

Of course, We know that their remarks sting your heart

فَسَبِّحۡ بِحَمۡدِ رَبِّكَ وَكُن مِّنَ اَ۬لسَّٰجِدِينَ

Chant the praises of your Lord! Be among those who fall prostrate

وَاَعۡبُدۡ رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ يَأۡتِيَكَ اَ۬لۡيَقِينُ

And remain obedient to your Lord, right until your death
