1

إِذَا وَقَعَتِ اِ۬لۡوَاقِعَةُ

When that (inevitable) event, (the Day of Judgment) occurs

2

لَيۡسَ لِوَقۡعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ

There shall be no one to deny the fact of its occurrence

3

خَافِضَةࣱ رَّافِعَةٌ

(It will) humble some, honor others

4

إِذَا رُجَّتِ اِ۬لۡأَرۡضُ رَجࣰّ ا

When the earth shall be shaken up violently

5

وَبُسَّتِ اِ۬لۡجِبَالُ بَسࣰّ ا

And the mountains are ground up into fine particles

6

فَكَانَتۡ هَبَآءࣰ مُّنۢبَثࣰّ ا

And scattered about as dust

7

وَكُنتُمۡ أَزۡوَٰجࣰ ا ثَلَٰثَةࣰ‏

(That day), you shall (all) be (divided into) three factions

8

فَأَصۡحَٰبُ اُ۬لۡمَيۡمَنَةِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ اُ۬لۡمَيۡمَنَةِ

The people of the right! How (fortunate) would be the people of the right

9

وَأَصۡحَٰبُ اُ۬لۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ اُ۬لۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ

The people of the left! How (wretched) would be the people of the left

10

وَاَلسَّٰبِقُونَ اَ۬لسَّٰبِقُونَ

(But of course), the foremost (in righteousness, those who exceeded and excelled) would be the foremost (in honor)

11

أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ اَ۬لۡمُقَرَّبُونَ

They would be nearest (to Allah)

12

فِي جَنَّٰتِ اِ۬لنَّعِيمِ

In the blissful paradise

13

ثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ اَ۬لۡأَوَّلِينَ

Many (of the foremost would be) from the earlier (generations)

14

وَقَلِيلࣱ مِّنَ اَ۬لۡأٓخِرِينَ

And fewer from the later (generations)

15

عَلَىٰ سُرُرࣲ مَّوۡضُونَةࣲ‏

(They will sit) on thrones engraved with gold and precious stones

16

مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيۡهَا مُتَقَٰبِلِينَ

They would recline (on their thrones), facing each other

17

يَطُوفُ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وِلۡدَٰنࣱ مُّخَلَّدُونَ

Youthful lads, who would stay young forever,would wait on them

18

بِأَكۡوَابࣲ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأۡسࣲ مِّن مَّعِينࣲ‏

With cups and goblets, and glasses filled (with pure wine) from the spring

19

لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنۡهَا وَلَا يُنزَفُونَ

It would neither cause a hangover, nor affect their senses

20

وَفَٰكِهَةࣲ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ

And (they shall have) fruits, any (kind) they choose

21

وَلَحۡمِ طَيۡرࣲ مِّمَّا يَشۡتَهُونَ

And the flesh of birds and fowl, whichever they fancy

22

وَحُورٌ عِينࣱ‏

And lovely-eyed nymphs (of paradise)

23

كَأَمۡثَٰلِ اِ۬للُّؤۡلُوِٕ اِ۬لۡمَكۡنُونِ

(So beautiful), as if they were pearls preserved in their shells

24

جَزَآءَۢ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ

(All as) rewards for what they used to do

25

لَا يَسۡمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغۡوࣰ ا وَلَا تَأۡثِيمًا

There, they shall not hear anything vulgar or vile

26

إِلَّا قِيلࣰ ا سَلَٰمࣰ ا سَلَٰمࣰ ا

Only serene and peaceful greetings

27

وَأَصۡحَٰبُ اُ۬لۡيَمِينِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ اُ۬لۡيَمِينِ

And for the people of the right? How (fortunate) would be the people of the right

28

فِي سِدۡرࣲ مَّخۡضُودࣲ‏

(They would be in a place) with thornless lotus trees

29

وَطَلۡحࣲ مَّنضُودࣲ‏

Clusters of Acacia _ (a tree in paradise)

30

وَظِلࣲّ مَّمۡدُودࣲ‏

Dense and defuse shade

31

وَمَآءࣲ مَّسۡكُوبࣲ‏

Water pouring out (of springs constantly)

32

وَفَٰكِهَةࣲ كَثِيرَةࣲ‏

Plenty of fruits

33

لَّا مَقۡطُوعَةࣲ وَلَا مَمۡنُوعَةࣲ‏

Unforbidden and limitless

34

وَفُرُشࣲ مَّرۡفُوعَةٍ

And elevated thrones

35

إِنَّآ أَنشَأۡنَٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءࣰ‏

(As for their wives), We would fashion them afresh

36

فَجَعَلۡنَٰهُنَّ أَبۡكَارًا

And make them young again, vernal and virginal

37

عُرُبًا أَتۡرَابࣰ ا

Loving and devoted mates of the same age

38

لِّأَصۡحَٰبِ اِ۬لۡيَمِينِ

(All this), for the people of the right

39

۞ثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ اَ۬لۡأَوَّلِينَ

(There would be) many (of them) from the earlier (generations)

40

وَثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ اَ۬لۡأٓخِرِينَ

And many from the later (generations)

41

وَأَصۡحَٰبُ اُ۬لشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ اُ۬لشِّمَالِ

And the people of the left? How (wretched) would be the people of the left

42

فِي سَمُومࣲ وَحَمِيمࣲ‏

(They would live) in the (blistering) hot wind, and the (boiling) hot water

43

وَظِلࣲّ مِّن يَحۡمُومࣲ‏

Under the cover of the dark smoke

44

لَّا بَارِدࣲ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ

Which is neither cool nor refreshing

45

إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُواْ قَبۡلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتۡرَفِينَ

Prior to this, they had the life of leisure and luxury

46

وَكَانُواْ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى اَ۬لۡحِنثِ اِ۬لۡعَظِيمِ

And persisted in the greatest of sins

47

وَكَانُواْ يَقُولُونَ أَٰى۪ذَا مُتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰ ا وَعِظَٰمًا أَٰ۟نَّا لَمَبۡعُوثُونَ

They used to say, "After we die and wither away into dust and bones, would we really be brought back to life

48

أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا اَ۬لۡأَوَّلُونَ

And our forefathers, too

49

قُلۡ إِنَّ اَ۬لۡأَوَّلِينَ وَاَلۡأٓخِرِينَ

(Tell them, oh prophet) "Indeed, all (of you) of the earlier and later times

50

لَمَجۡمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَٰتِ يَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ‏

Would certainly be gathered together at the selected place, on an appointed day

51

ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمۡ أَيُّهَا اَ۬لضَّآلُّونَ اَ۬لۡمُكَذِّبُونَ

And then, oh you who went astray and rejected (the truth)

52

لَأٓكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرࣲ مِّن زَقُّومࣲ‏

You would certainly have to eat the fruit of the tree of ´zaqqum´

53

فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنۡهَا اَ۬لۡبُطُونَ

And stuff yourself with it

54

فَشَٰرِبُونَ عَلَيۡهِ مِنَ اَ۬لۡحَمِيمِ

(To flush it down), you are going to have (only) hot boiling water

55

فَشَٰرِبُونَ شَرۡبَ اَ۬لۡهِيمِ

Which you will drink like a thirst stricken camel

56

هَٰذَا نُزُلُهُمۡ يَوۡمَ اَ۬لدِّينِ

Such will be their ´reception´ on the Day of Judgment

57

نَحۡنُ خَلَقۡنَٰكُمۡ فَلَوۡلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ

It is We Who has created you. Why then do you not affirm the truth

58

أَفَرَءَيۡتُم مَّا تُمۡنُونَ

Do you ever think about the semen you ejaculate

59

ءَٰا۬نتُمۡ تَخۡلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ اُ۬لۡخَٰلِقُونَ

Do you turn it into a human fetus, or are We the Creator

60

نَحۡنُ قَدَّرۡنَا بَيۡنَكُمُ اُ۬لۡمَوۡتَ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوقِينَ

We have decreed death for all of you, and We are not incapable

61

عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمۡثَٰلَكُمۡ وَنُنشِئَكُمۡ فِي مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ

Of altering your form, and reshaping you into an altogether different existence. An existence about which you know absolutely nothing

62

وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمۡتُمُ اُ۬لنَّشَآءَةَ اَ۬لۡأُولٜ يٰ فَلَوۡلَا تَذَّكَّرُونَ

You are certainly well aware of this (present) form of creation. So, why do you not heed

63

أَفَرَءَيۡتُم مَّا تَحۡرُثُونَ

Do you ever think about the seeds you sow in the soil

64

ءَٰا۬نتُمۡ تَزۡرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ اُ۬لزَّٰرِعُونَ

Do you make them grow? Or is it We Who turns the seeds into a field full of crops

65

لَوۡ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلۡنَٰهُ حُطَٰمࣰ ا فَظَلۡتُمۡ تَفَكَّهُونَ

If We wish, We can convert the crop into chaff and leave you whining

66

إِنَّا لَمُغۡرَمُونَ

(Saying), "We have really been penalized

67

بَلۡ نَحۡنُ مَحۡرُومُونَ

In fact we have been deprived

68

أَفَرَءَيۡتُمُ اُ۬لۡمَآءَ اَ۬لَّذِي تَشۡرَبُونَ

Do you ever think about the water you drink

69

ءَٰا۬نتُمۡ أَنزَلۡتُمُوهُ مِنَ اَ۬لۡمُزۡنِ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ اُ۬لۡمُنزِلُونَ

Did you bring it down from the rain clouds? Or is it We Who makes the rain come down

70

لَوۡ نَشَآءُ جَعَلۡنَٰهُ أُجَاجࣰ ا فَلَوۡلَا تَشۡكُرُونَ

If We wish, We could make it brackish. So why aren´t you grateful

71

أَفَرَءَيۡتُمُ اُ۬لنَّارَ اَ۬لَّتِي تُورُونَ

Do you ever think about the fire you build (from logs)

72

ءَٰا۬نتُمۡ أَنشَأۡتُمۡ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ اُ۬لۡمُنشِـُٔونَ

Did you bring the trees (and forests) into being? Or is it We Who causes them to be

73

نَحۡنُ جَعَلۡنَٰهَا تَذۡكِرَةࣰ وَمَتَٰعࣰ ا لِّلۡمُقۡوِينَ

We have made all this to remind you (of Us), and a skill (providing comfort) for those in the wilderness

74

فَسَبِّحۡ بِاسۡمِ رَبِّكَ اَ۬لۡعَظِيمِ

So glorify and praise the name of your Supreme Lord

75

۞فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ اِ۬لنُّجُومِ

No, of course not! I swear by the position of the stars

76

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمࣱ لَّوۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ

And it is, indeed, a very solemn oath if you only knew

77

إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرۡءَانࣱ كَرِيمࣱ‏

(I swear that) this (Qur´an) is certainly a noble recital

78

فِي كِتَٰبࣲ مَّكۡنُونࣲ‏

(Inscribed) in a well-guarded book

79

لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا اَ۬لۡمُطَهَّرُونَ

Only those who are (physically and ritually) clean, (are allowed to) touch it

80

تَنزِيلࣱ مِّن رَّبِّ اِ۬لۡعَٰلَمِينَ

(It is) a revelation from the Lord of the universe

81

أَفَبِهَٰذَا اَ۬لۡحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدۡهِنُونَ

Yet, do you shun this narrative (nonchalantly)

82

وَتَجۡعَلُونَ رِزۡقَكُمۡ أَنَّكُمۡ تُكَذِّبُونَ

Do you make the denial (of the truth) your livelihood, (and respond to the blessings by rejecting the truth)

83

فَلَوۡلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ اِ۬لۡحُلۡقُومَ

How about when (the soul of the dying) heaves up into the throat

84

وَأَنتُمۡ حِينَئِذࣲ تَنظُرُونَ

At that time, you can do nothing but look on (helplessly)

85

وَنَحۡنُ أَقۡرَبُ إِلَيۡهِ مِنكُمۡ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تُبۡصِرُونَ

Compared to you, We are closer to the one dying. But you cannot see

86

فَلَوۡلَآ إِن كُنتُمۡ غَيۡرَ مَدِينِينَ

Thus, if (you think) you are not subject to reckoning, why can´t you

87

تَرۡجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَٰدِقِينَ

Return the soul back (to the dead), if you are (indeed) truthful

88

فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ اَ۬لۡمُقَرَّبِينَ

And if the dying person had been (the one) nearest (to Allah)

89

فَرَوۡحࣱ وَرَيۡحَانࣱ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمࣲ‏

(He shall have) peace and tranquility, bounteous provisions and the blissful idyllic paradise

90

وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنۡ أَصۡحَٰبِ اِ۬لۡيَمِينِ

While if the (dying) person is among those of the right (side)

91

فَسَلَٰمࣱ لَّكَ مِنۡ أَصۡحَٰبِ اِ۬لۡيَمِينِ

(He shall hear the greetings), "Peace be to you. (You are) among those of the right (side)

92

وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ اَ۬لۡمُكَذِّبِينَ اَ۬لضَّآلِّينَ

But if the deceased happens to be among those who rejected and went astray

93

فَنُزُلࣱ مِّنۡ حَمِيمࣲ‏

(He shall have) the hot boiling water ´to welcome´ him

94

وَتَصۡلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ

And the roasting heat of the hellfire

95

إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهۡوَ حَقُّ اُ۬لۡيَقِينِ

Indeed! That is definitely and most certainly the absolute truth

96

فَسَبِّحۡ بِاسۡمِ رَبِّكَ اَ۬لۡعَظِيمِ

So, (oh prophet)! glorify and praise the name of the Greatest, your Supreme Lord
