Surah Ash-Shu'ara

طسٓمٓۚ

Ta, Seen, Meem

تِلۡكَ ءَايَٰتُ اُ۬لۡكِتَٰبِ اِ۬لۡمُبِينِ

These are the verses of the vividly clear book

لَعَلَّكَ بَٰخِعࣱ نَّفۡسَكَ أَلَّا يَكُونُواْ مُؤۡمِنِينَ

Would you then be overcome with sorrow because they do not believe

إِن نَّشَأۡ نُنزِلۡ عَلَيۡهِم مِّنَ اَ۬لسَّمَآءِ اَ۬يَةࣰ فَظَلَّتۡ أَعۡنَٰقُهُمۡ لَهَا خَٰضِعِينَ

We can, if We want, reveal to them a sign from the heavens, which would cause their heads to bow down (in submission)

وَمَا يَأۡتِيهِم مِّن ذِكۡرࣲ مِّنَ اَ۬لرَّحۡمَٰنِ مُحۡدَثٍ إِلَّا كَانُواْ عَنۡهُ مُعۡرِضِينَ

They turn their backs on every fresh reminder that ever comes to them from Rehman

فَقَدۡ كَذَّبُواْ فَسَيَأۡتِيهِمۡ أَنۢبَٰٓؤُاْ مَا كَانُواْ بِهِۦ يَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ

They have now already rejected it (the Qur´an) and have made fun of it. But very soon the reality (and the effect) of their mockery will dawn upon them

أَوَلَمۡ يَرَوۡاْ إِلَى اَ۬لۡأَرۡضِ كَمۡ أَنۢبَتۡنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوۡجࣲ كَرِيمٍ

Do they not look at the earth? We have caused all kinds of beneficial plants to grow on the land

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَأٓيَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ

In this, there is indeed a sign! Yet, most of them are not going to believe

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهۡوَ اَ۬لۡعَزِيزُ اُ۬لرَّحِيمُ

And your Lord, indeed, is the most Powerful and the most Kind

۞وَإِذۡ نَادَىٰ رَبُّكَ مُوسٜ يٰٓ أَنِ اِ۪ئۡتِ اِ۬لۡقَوۡمَ اَ۬لظَّٰلِمِينَ

(Tell them about the time) when your Lord summoned Musa, "Go to the evil-doing nation

قَوۡمَ فِرۡعَوۡنَۚ أَلَا يَتَّقُونَ

The nation of the pharaoh! Do they not fear

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّيَ أَخَافُ أَن يُكَذِّبُونِ

Musa said, "My Lord, I am really afraid that they will reject me

وَيَضِيقُ صَدۡرِي وَلَا يَنطَلِقُ لِسَانِي فَأَرۡسِلۡ إِلَىٰ هَٰرُونَ

My chest feels tight and my tongue fails to express. So, send for (my brother) Haroon

وَلَهُمۡ عَلَيَّ ذَنۢبࣱ فَأَخَافُ أَن يَقۡتُلُونِ

They have a charge (of a crime) against me. I fear that they will put me to death

قَالَ كَلَّاۖ فَاَذۡهَبَا بِـَٔايَٰتِنَآۖ إِنَّا مَعَكُم مُّسۡتَمِعُونَ

(Allah) said, "Of course not! Go to them _ both of you _ with Our signs. Of course, We are with you listening (to everything)

فَأۡتِيَا فِرۡعَوۡنَ فَقُولَآ إِنَّا رَسُولُ رَبِّ اِ۬لۡعَٰلَمِينَ

So go to the pharaoh and say, "We are the messengers of the Lord of the entire universe

أَنۡ أَرۡسِلۡ مَعَنَا بَنِيٓ إِسۡرَٰٓءِيلَ

Therefore, send the children of Israel with us

قَالَ أَلَمۡ نُرَبِّكَ فِينَا وَلِيدࣰ ا وَلَبِثتَّ فِينَا مِنۡ عُمُرِكَ سِنِينَ

The pharaoh said, "Did we not raise you up from an infant? And did you not spend a portion of your life with us

وَفَعَلۡتَ فَعۡلَتَكَ اَ۬لَّتِي فَعَلۡتَ وَأَنتَ مِنَ اَ۬لۡكٰ۪فِرِينَ

Yet, you committed that crime! That which you did! You are ungrateful

قَالَ فَعَلۡتُهَآ إِذࣰ ا وَأَنَا۠ مِنَ اَ۬لضَّآلِّينَ

(Musa) said, "I did it then, when I was misguided

فَفَرَرۡتُ مِنكُمۡ لَمَّا خِفۡتُكُمۡ فَوَهَبَ لِي رَبِّي حُكۡمࣰ ا وَجَعَلَنِي مِنَ اَ۬لۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

So I felt frightened and ran away from you. But my Lord gave me the commandments and appointed me a messenger

وَتِلۡكَ نِعۡمَةࣱ تَمُنُّهَا عَلَيَّ أَنۡ عَبَّدتَّ بَنِيٓ إِسۡرَٰٓءِيلَ

This favor you boast of conferring upon me is (nothing but the fact) that you have enslaved the children of Israel

قَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ وَمَا رَبُّ اُ۬لۡعَٰلَمِينَ

The pharaoh asked, "And what is this Lord of the universe

قَالَ رَبُّ اُ۬لسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَاَلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَآۖ إِن كُنتُم مُّوقِنِينَ

Musa said, "The Lord of the heavens and the earth, and everything that lies between the two, if you want to be specific

قَالَ لِمَنۡ حَوۡلَهُۥٓ أَلَا تَسۡتَمِعُونَ

The pharaoh said to those around him, "Did you hear that

قَالَ رَبُّكُمۡ وَرَبُّ ءَابَآئِكُمُ اُ۬لۡأَوَّلِينَ

(Musa) added, "Your Lord, and the Lord of your parents and ancestors

قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَكُمُ اُ۬لَّذِيٓ أُرۡسِلَ إِلَيۡكُمۡ لَمَجۡنُونࣱ‏

(The pharaoh) said, "This messenger of yours sent towards you is surely a lunatic

قَالَ رَبُّ اُ۬لۡمَشۡرِقِ وَاَلۡمَغۡرِبِ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَآۖ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ

(Musa) continued, "The Lord of the East and the West and whatever lies between the two, if you were to understand

قَالَ لَئِنِ اِ۪تَّخَذتَّ إِلَٰهًا غَيۡرِي لَأَجۡعَلَنَّكَ مِنَ اَ۬لۡمَسۡجُونِينَ

(The pharaoh) said, "I will have you rot in prison if you accept any god other than me

قَالَ أَوَلَوۡ جِئۡتُكَ بِشَيۡءࣲ مُّبِينࣲ‏

(Musa) said, "Even if I offered something definite (as evidence)

قَالَ فَأۡتِ بِهِۦٓ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ اَ۬لصَّٰدِقِينَ

The pharaoh said, "Present it now, if you really mean it

فَأَلۡقَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِيَ ثُعۡبَانࣱ مُّبِينࣱ‏

(Musa) threw down the stick in his hand. Then, suddenly (and distinctly) it became a serpent

وَنَزَعَ يَدَهُۥ فَإِذَا هِيَ بَيۡضَآءُ لِلنَّٰظِرِينَ

(He pulled his hand out of his armpit) and it suddenly appeared dazzling white to the viewers

۞قَالَ لِلۡمَلَإِ حَوۡلَهُۥٓ إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَسَٰحِرٌ عَلِيمࣱ‏

The pharaoh addressed his courtiers saying, "He is surely a skilled magician

يُرِيدُ أَن يُخۡرِجَكُم مِّنۡ أَرۡضِكُم بِسِحۡرِهِۦ فَمَاذَا تَأۡمُرُونَ

By the force of his magic, he wants to expel you from this land. Now, what do you recommend

قَالُوٓاْ أَرۡجِـٔۡهُ وَأَخَاهُ وَاَبۡعَثۡ فِي اِ۬لۡمَدَآئِنِ حَٰشِرِينَ

They said, "Let him and his brother go back. Then, send your agents to the cities

يَأۡتُوكَ بِكُلِّ سَحّ۪ارٍ عَلِيمࣲ‏

They will summon every expert magician before you

فَجُمِعَ اَ۬لسَّحَرَةُ لِمِيقَٰتِ يَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ‏

At the specified time on the appointed day, the magicians were summoned

وَقِيلَ لِلنّ۪اسِ هَلۡ أَنتُم مُّجۡتَمِعُونَ

And the people were told, "Would you, too, come to the assembly

لَعَلَّنَا نَتَّبِعُ اُ۬لسَّحَرَةَ إِن كَانُواْ هُمُ اُ۬لۡغَٰلِبِينَ

So that if the magicians triumph, we will follow them

فَلَمَّا جَآءَ اَ۬لسَّحَرَةُ قَالُواْ لِفِرۡعَوۡنَ أَٰى۪نَّ لَنَا لَأَجۡرًا إِن كُنَّا نَحۡنُ اُ۬لۡغَٰلِبِينَ

The magicians came to the pharaoh and said, "There would surely be a reward in it for us, if we are victorious. Wouldn´t there

قَالَ نَعَمۡ وَإِنَّكُمۡ إِذࣰ ا لَّمِنَ اَ۬لۡمُقَرَّبِينَ

(The pharaoh) said, "Yes! In that case, you will become my close associates

قَالَ لَهُم مُّوسٜ يٰٓ أَلۡقُواْ مَآ أَنتُم مُّلۡقُونَ

Musa said to them, "Cast (your spell) whatever you have to

فَأَلۡقَوۡاْ حِبَالَهُمۡ وَعِصِيَّهُمۡ وَقَالُواْ بِعِزَّةِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ اُ۬لۡغَٰلِبُونَ

They cast their (spells on the) ropes and sticks and said, "By the power of the pharaoh, we will certainly triumph

فَأَلۡقَىٰ مُوسٜ يٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِيَ تَلَقَّفُ مَا يَأۡفِكُونَ

Musa, too, threw his stick and it gobbled up all the illusions they had conjured up

فَأُلۡقِيَ اَ۬لسَّحَرَةُ سَٰجِدِينَ

The magicians fell down prostrate

قَالُوٓاْ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّ اِ۬لۡعَٰلَمِينَ

They said, "We accept the Lord of the universe

رَبِّ مُوسٜ يٰ وَهَٰرُونَ

The Lord of Musa and Haroon

قَالَ ءَاٰ۬مَنتُمۡ لَهُۥ قَبۡلَ أَنۡ ءَاذَنَ لَكُمۡۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَكَبِيرُكُمُ اُ۬لَّذِي عَلَّمَكُمُ اُ۬لسِّحۡرَ فَلَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَ لَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَيۡدِيَكُمۡ وَأَرۡجُلَكُم مِّنۡ خِلَٰفࣲ وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمۡ أَجۡمَعِينَ

The pharaoh said, "You dare to believe him before I could give you my consent. He must be your chief who has taught you the art of magic. You will soon come to know. Be sure, I will lop off your hand from one side and the leg from the other. After that, I will definitely crucify you (all)

قَالُواْ لَا ضَيۡرَۖ إِنَّآ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا مُنقَلِبُونَ

They said, "It does not matter! We will surely return to our Lord

إِنَّا نَطۡمَعُ أَن يَغۡفِرَ لَنَا رَبُّنَا خَطَٰيَٰنَآ أَن كُنَّآ أَوَّلَ اَ۬لۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

(They prayed), "We truly hope that our Lord will forgive our sins, (since) we are the first ones to believe

۞وَأَوۡحَيۡنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسٜ يٰٓ أَنۡ أَسۡرِ بِعِبَادِيٓ إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ

We sent revelation to Musa, "Slip away with My servants at night. You are surely going to be pursued

فَأَرۡسَلَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ فِي اِ۬لۡمَدَآئِنِ حَٰشِرِينَ

The pharaoh sent his agents to the cities to proclaim

إِنَّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَشِرۡذِمَةࣱ قَلِيلُونَ

They are just a handful of people

وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَنَا لَغَآئِظُونَ

They have wrought our wrath (upon themselves)

وَإِنَّا لَجَمِيعٌ حَذِرُونَ

And we are all here _ watchful and forewarned

فَأَخۡرَجۡنَٰهُم مِّن جَنَّٰتࣲ وَعُيُونࣲ‏

(In this manner) We brought them out of their gardens, and spas

وَكُنُوزࣲ وَمَقَامࣲ كَرِيمࣲ‏

Their treasures and their fine residences

كَذَٰلِكَۖ وَأَوۡرَثۡنَٰهَا بَنِيٓ إِسۡرَٰٓءِيلَ

And We had the children of Israel inherit such things

فَأَتۡبَعُوهُم مُّشۡرِقِينَ

They went after Musa and his followers at the crack of dawn

فَلَمَّا تَرَٰٓءَا اَ۬لۡجَمۡعَانِ قَالَ أَصۡحَٰبُ مُوسٜ يٰٓ إِنَّا لَمُدۡرَكُونَ

When the two opposing groups saw each other, the followers of Musa said, "We have been caught

قَالَ كَلَّآۖ إِنَّ مَعِي رَبِّي سَيَهۡدِينِ

(Musa) said, "Of course not! My Lord is with me! He will guide me, for sure

فَأَوۡحَيۡنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسٜ يٰٓ أَنِ اِ۪ضۡرِب بِّعَصَاكَ اَ۬لۡبَحۡرَۖ فَاَنفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرۡقࣲ كَاَلطَّوۡدِ اِ۬لۡعَظِيمِ

We instructed Musa by revelation, to strike the sea with his stick! The sea split; each portion stood like a huge towering mountain

وَأَزۡلَفۡنَا ثَمَّ اَ۬لۡأٓخَرِينَ

We brought the other group closer

وَأَنجَيۡنَا مُوسٜ يٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥٓ أَجۡمَعِينَ

We rescued Musa and all those with him

ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا اَ۬لۡأٓخَرِينَ

And We drowned the others

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَأٓيَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ

Surely, there is a sign in that. Yet, most of them do not believe

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهۡوَ اَ۬لۡعَزِيزُ اُ۬لرَّحِيمُ

It is your Lord Who is the most Powerful and the most Merciful

وَاَتۡلُ عَلَيۡهِمۡ نَبَأَ ا۪بۡرَٰهِيمَ

Narrate to them the story of Ibraheem

إِذۡ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦ مَا تَعۡبُدُونَ

As he asked his father and his people, "Whom do you worship

قَالُواْ نَعۡبُدُ أَصۡنَامࣰ ا فَنَظَلُّ لَهَا عَٰكِفِينَ

They said, "We worship idols. And our devotion to them is constant

قَالَ هَلۡ يَسۡمَعُونَكُمۡ إِذ تَّدۡعُونَ

(Ibraheem) said, "Do they hear you when you call them

أَوۡ يَنفَعُونَكُمۡ أَوۡ يَضُرُّونَ

And do they help you, or hurt you

قَالُواْ بَلۡ وَجَدۡنَآ ءَابَآءَنَا كَذَٰلِكَ يَفۡعَلُونَ

They said, "No! But we found our forefathers doing the same thing

قَالَ أَفَرَءَيۡتُم مَّا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُونَ

(Ibraheem) said, "Did you ever notice (prudently) what it is that you worship

أَنتُمۡ وَءَابَآؤُكُمُ اُ۬لۡأَقۡدَمُونَ

You and your parents of bygone days

فَإِنَّهُمۡ عَدُوࣱّ لِّيَ إِلَّا رَبَّ اَ۬لۡعَٰلَمِينَ

Indeed, they are my enemies _ all of them; other than the Lord of the worlds

۞اَ۬لَّذِي خَلَقَنِي فَهۡوَ يَهۡدِينِ

The One Who created me; and He guides

وَاَلَّذِي هُوَ يُطۡعِمُنِي وَيَسۡقِينِ

The One Who feeds me and quenches my thirst

وَإِذَا مَرِضۡتُ فَهۡوَ يَشۡفِينِ

When I fall sick, He restores my health

وَاَلَّذِي يُمِيتُنِي ثُمَّ يُحۡيِينِ

The One Who will give me death and will resurrect me after that

وَاَلَّذِيٓ أَطۡمَعُ أَن يَغۡفِرَ لِي خَطِيٓـَٔتِي يَوۡمَ اَ۬لدِّينِ

The One Who, I hope, will forgive my sins on the Day of Judgment

رَبِّ هَبۡ لِي حُكۡمࣰ ا وَأَلۡحِقۡنِي بِالصَّٰلِحِينَ

My Lord! Give me the wisdom and enroll me among the righteous

وَاَجۡعَل لِّي لِسَانَ صِدۡقࣲ فِي اِ۬لۡأٓخِرِينَ

Grant me an honorable reputation with the future generations

وَاَجۡعَلۡنِي مِن وَرَثَةِ جَنَّةِ اِ۬لنَّعِيمِ

And have me inherit the paradise full of favors

وَاَغۡفِر لِّأَبِيَ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ اَ۬لضَّآلِّينَ

Forgive my father. He has surely gone astray

وَلَا تُخۡزِنِي يَوۡمَ يُبۡعَثُونَ

Do not disgrace me on the day they shall all be resurrected

يَوۡمَ لَا يَنفَعُ مَالࣱ وَلَا بَنُونَ

The day when wealth and offspring will confer no benefits

إِلَّا مَنۡ أَتَى اَ۬للَّهَ بِقَلۡبࣲ سَلِيمࣲ‏

Except to the one who comes to Allah with a sincere heart (free from doubt and disbelief)

وَأُزۡلِفَتِ اِ۬لۡجَنَّةُ لِلۡمُتَّقِينَ

The paradise will be brought close at hand for the righteous

وَبُرِّزَتِ اِ۬لۡجَحِيمُ لِلۡغَاوِينَ

And for the misguided the hellfire shall be made (conspicuous and) fully visible

وَقِيلَ لَهُمۡ أَيۡنَ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُونَ

And they will be asked, "Where are those you used to worship

مِن دُونِ اِ۬للَّهِ هَلۡ يَنصُرُونَكُمۡ أَوۡ يَنتَصِرُونَ

Other than Allah? Are they helping you now? Are they helping themselves

فَكُبۡكِبُواْ فِيهَا هُمۡ وَاَلۡغَاوُۥنَ

They, along with the misguided, will be toppled into the hellfire

وَجُنُودُ إِبۡلِيسَ أَجۡمَعُونَ

As well as the armies of Iblees _ every one of them

قَالُواْ وَهُمۡ فِيهَا يَخۡتَصِمُونَ

There, they will quarrel with each other, and say

تَاَللَّهِ إِن كُنَّا لَفِي ضَلَٰلࣲ مُّبِينٍ

By Allah, we were clearly wrong

إِذۡ نُسَوِّيكُم بِرَبِّ اِ۬لۡعَٰلَمِينَ

When we thought of you as equal to the Lord of the universe

وَمَآ أَضَلَّنَآ إِلَّا اَ۬لۡمُجۡرِمُونَ

Criminals they were who led us astray

فَمَا لَنَا مِن شَٰفِعِينَ

Now we have no one to mediate (and plead our case)

وَلَا صَدِيقٍ حَمِيمࣲ‏

Nor do we have an intimate friend

فَلَوۡ أَنَّ لَنَا كَرَّةࣰ فَنَكُونَ مِنَ اَ۬لۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

If only we had another chance, we would surely be among the believers

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَأٓيَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ

There is surely a sign in that, but most of them do not believe

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهۡوَ اَ۬لۡعَزِيزُ اُ۬لرَّحِيمُ

Your Lord surely is the One Who is the most Powerful and the most Merciful

كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ نُوحٍ اِ۬لۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

The nation of Nooh rejected the messengers

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ نُوحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

Their brother Nooh said to them, "Do you not fear (Allah)

إِنِّي لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِينࣱ‏

Surely, I am a faithful (and a reliable) messenger for you

فَاَتَّقُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

Fear Allah and obey me

وَمَآ أَسۡـَٔلُكُمۡ عَلَيۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِيَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ اِ۬لۡعَٰلَمِينَ

In return, I do not seek any compensation from you. My reward exists only with the Lord of the universe

فَاَتَّقُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

So, fear Allah and follow me

۞قَالُوٓاْ أَنُؤۡمِنُ لَكَ وَاَتَّبَعَكَ اَ۬لۡأَرۡذَلُونَ

They said, "Shall we believe you? Only the humble humdrum (and the despised) are following you

قَالَ وَمَا عِلۡمِي بِمَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ

(Nooh) said, "I have no knowledge of what they used to do

إِنۡ حِسَابُهُمۡ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّيۖ لَوۡ تَشۡعُرُونَ

My Lord alone has the prerogative to judge them, if only you could realize

وَمَآ أَنَا۠ بِطَارِدِ اِ۬لۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

I am not going to drive away the believers

إِنۡ أَنَا۠ إِلَّا نَذِيرࣱ مُّبِينࣱ‏

I am a warner _ plain and simple

قَالُواْ لَئِن لَّمۡ تَنتَهِ يَٰنُوحُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ اَ۬لۡمَرۡجُومِينَ

They said, "Oh Nooh, if you did not stop, you would surely be cursed and sentenced to death by stoning

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنَّ قَوۡمِي كَذَّبُونِ

(Nooh) said, "My Lord, my people have rejected me

فَاَفۡتَحۡ بَيۡنِي وَبَيۡنَهُمۡ فَتۡحࣰ ا وَنَجِّنِي وَمَن مَّعِي مِنَ اَ۬لۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

Pronounce your judgment between me and them; and rescue me and all the believers with me

فَأَنجَيۡنَٰهُ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥ فِي اِ۬لۡفُلۡكِ اِ۬لۡمَشۡحُونِ

So We rescued him and those with him aboard a laden ship

ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا بَعۡدُ اُ۬لۡبَاقِينَ

And after that, We drowned all those (unbelievers) left behind

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَأٓيَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ

In that is a sign, of course! Yet, most of them do not believe

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهۡوَ اَ۬لۡعَزِيزُ اُ۬لرَّحِيمُ

And your Lord, surely, is the One Who is the most Powerful and the most Merciful

كَذَّبَتۡ عَادٌ اِ۬لۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

The people of ´Aads´ rejected the messengers

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ هُودٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

Their brother Hood said to them, "Do you not fear (Allah)

إِنِّي لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِينࣱ‏

Of course, I am a faithful (and a reliable) messenger for you

فَاَتَّقُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

So fear Allah and obey me

وَمَآ أَسۡـَٔلُكُمۡ عَلَيۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِيَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ اِ۬لۡعَٰلَمِينَ

In return, I do not seek any compensation from you. My reward exists only with the Lord of the universe

أَتَبۡنُونَ بِكُلِّ رِيعٍ ءَايَةࣰ تَعۡبَثُونَ

At every raised spot you construct high palaces in vain, and to no avail

وَتَتَّخِذُونَ مَصَانِعَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَخۡلُدُونَ

You take up (residence in) large structures as if you will live (in them) forever

وَإِذَا بَطَشۡتُم بَطَشۡتُمۡ جَبَّارِينَ

And when you assault, you land on your victim with a vengeance

فَاَتَّقُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

Fear Allah and follow me

وَاَتَّقُواْ اُ۬لَّذِيٓ أَمَدَّكُم بِمَا تَعۡلَمُونَ

Fear the One Who has imparted the knowledge you possess

أَمَدَّكُم بِأَنۡعَٰمࣲ وَبَنِينَ

And has provided you the cattle and the sons

وَجَنَّٰتࣲ وَعُيُونٍ

The gardens and the springs

إِنِّيَ أَخَافُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ عَذَابَ يَوۡمٍ عَظِيمࣲ‏

In fact, I fear that a torture of a severe day might come upon you

قَالُواْ سَوَآءٌ عَلَيۡنَآ أَوَعَظۡتَ أَمۡ لَمۡ تَكُن مِّنَ اَ۬لۡوَٰعِظِينَ

They said, "It makes no difference to us whether you preach or discontinue your sermons altogether

إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا خَلۡقُ اُ۬لۡأَوَّلِينَ

These are merely the fantasies of the earlier folks

وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ

We are not going to be punished

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَهۡلَكۡنَٰهُمۡۗ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَأٓيَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ

So they rejected the messenger and We destroyed them. In this, is a sign of course! But most of them do not believe

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهۡوَ اَ۬لۡعَزِيزُ اُ۬لرَّحِيمُ

And indeed your Lord is the One Who is the most Powerful and the most Merciful

كَذَّبَت ثَّمُودُ اُ۬لۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

The people of ´Samood´ rejected the messengers

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ صَٰلِحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

Their brother Saleh said to them, "Do you not fear (Allah)

إِنِّي لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِينࣱ‏

Of course I am a faithful (and a reliable) messenger for you

فَاَتَّقُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

So fear Allah and obey me

وَمَآ أَسۡـَٔلُكُمۡ عَلَيۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِيَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ اِ۬لۡعَٰلَمِينَ

In return, I do not seek any compensation from you. My reward exists only with the Lord of the universe

۞أَتُتۡرَكُونَ فِي مَا هَٰهُنَآ ءَامِنِينَ

Would you be allowed to stay in these comforts, forever secure

فِي جَنَّٰتࣲ وَعُيُونࣲ‏

In these gardens and springs

وَزُرُوعࣲ وَنَخۡلࣲ طَلۡعُهَا هَضِيمࣱ‏

And the green fields, and date trees with their succulent fruit

وَتَنۡحِتُونَ مِنَ اَ۬لۡجِبَالِ بُيُوتࣰ ا فَرِهِينَ

You carve homes out of mountains skillfully

فَاَتَّقُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

So fear Allah and follow me

وَلَا تُطِيعُوٓاْ أَمۡرَ اَ۬لۡمُسۡرِفِينَ

Do not obey the orders of the immoderate (and the unrestrained)

اَ۬لَّذِينَ يُفۡسِدُونَ فِي اِ۬لۡأَرۡضِ وَلَا يُصۡلِحُونَ

Those who spoil the morals (and spread corruption and depravity) on the earth, and do nothing to improve matters

قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مِنَ اَ۬لۡمُسَحَّرِينَ

They said, "Surely, you are one of the crazy persons

مَآ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُنَا فَأۡتِ بِـَٔايَةٍ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ اَ۬لصَّٰدِقِينَ

You are just a human being like us! Bring us a sign if you are telling the truth

قَالَ هَٰذِهِۦ نَاقَةࣱ لَّهَا شِرۡبࣱ وَلَكُمۡ شِرۡبُ يَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ‏

(The messenger Saleh) said, "Here, (the sign) is this camel. On specified days, the source of water shall be solely for the camel, while on other days it will be yours

وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوٓءࣲ فَيَأۡخُذَكُمۡ عَذَابُ يَوۡمٍ عَظِيمࣲ‏

Do not cause it any harm, or else the punishment of a severe day will grab you

فَعَقَرُوهَا فَأَصۡبَحُواْ نَٰدِمِينَ

But they killed the camel; a decision they came to regret

فَأَخَذَهُمُ اُ۬لۡعَذَابُۗ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَأٓيَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ

A torment gripped them. There is a sign in that, of course! But most of them do not believe

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهۡوَ اَ۬لۡعَزِيزُ اُ۬لرَّحِيمُ

Your Lord is surely the One Who is the most Powerful and the most Merciful

كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ لُوطٍ اِ۬لۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

The nation of Loot rejected the messengers

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ أَخُوهُمۡ لُوطٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

Their brother Loot said to them, "Do you not fear (Allah)

إِنِّي لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِينࣱ‏

I am surely a faithful (and a reliable) messenger for you

فَاَتَّقُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

So fear Allah and obey me

وَمَآ أَسۡـَٔلُكُمۡ عَلَيۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِيَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ اِ۬لۡعَٰلَمِينَ

In return, I do not seek any compensation from you. My reward exists only with the Lord of the universe

أَتَأۡتُونَ اَ۬لذُّكۡرَانَ مِنَ اَ۬لۡعَٰلَمِينَ

Do you commit (the sexual act) with the males in this world

وَتَذَرُونَ مَا خَلَقَ لَكُمۡ رَبُّكُم مِّنۡ أَزۡوَٰجِكُمۚ بَلۡ أَنتُمۡ قَوۡمٌ عَادُونَ

And you forsake the mates that your Lord created for you? Indeed, you are a nation guilty of transcending the limits

قَالُواْ لَئِن لَّمۡ تَنتَهِ يَٰلُوطُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ اَ۬لۡمُخۡرَجِينَ

They said, "If you did not stop, oh Loot, you would most certainly be expelled

قَالَ إِنِّي لِعَمَلِكُم مِّنَ اَ۬لۡقَالِينَ

He said, "I am certainly among those who loathe and abhor your deeds

رَبِّ نَجِّنِي وَأَهۡلِي مِمَّا يَعۡمَلُونَ

He prayed, "My Lord! Save me and my family from (the evil of) what they do

فَنَجَّيۡنَٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥٓ أَجۡمَعِينَ

So We saved him and all of his family

إِلَّا عَجُوزࣰ ا فِي اِ۬لۡغَٰبِرِينَ

Except an old woman, _ Loot´s wife _ who stayed behind (with the evil doers)

ثُمَّ دَمَّرۡنَا اَ۬لۡأٓخَرِينَ

After that We annihilated the rest of them

وَأَمۡطَرۡنَا عَلَيۡهِم مَّطَرࣰ اۖ فَسَآءَ مَطَرُ اُ۬لۡمُنذَرِينَ

We doused them with a downpour (of brimstone)! A devastating evil rain (fell) upon those forewarned

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَأٓيَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ

There is surely a sign in this! But most of them do not believe

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهۡوَ اَ۬لۡعَزِيزُ اُ۬لرَّحِيمُ

Your Lord is surely the One Who is the most Powerful and the most Merciful

۞كَذَّبَ أَصۡحَٰبُ لۡـَٔيۡكَةِ اِ۬لۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

And the people of ´Aika´ rejected the messengers

إِذۡ قَالَ لَهُمۡ شُعَيۡبٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

When Shoaib said to them, "Do you not fear (Allah)

إِنِّي لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِينࣱ‏

I am surely a faithful (and a reliable) messenger for you

فَاَتَّقُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

So fear Allah and obey me

وَمَآ أَسۡـَٔلُكُمۡ عَلَيۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍۖ إِنۡ أَجۡرِيَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ اِ۬لۡعَٰلَمِينَ

In return, I do not seek any compensation from you. My reward exists only with the Lord of the universe

أَوۡفُواْ اُ۬لۡكَيۡلَ وَلَا تَكُونُواْ مِنَ اَ۬لۡمُخۡسِرِينَ

Fill the measure to its capacity. Do not inflict a loss (by supplying reduced amount)

وَزِنُواْ بِالۡقُسۡطَاسِ اِ۬لۡمُسۡتَقِيمِ

And weigh with an accurate balance

وَلَا تَبۡخَسُواْ اُ۬لنَّاسَ أَشۡيَآءَهُمۡ وَلَا تَعۡثَوۡاْ فِي اِ۬لۡأَرۡضِ مُفۡسِدِينَ

Do not defraud people of their goods, and do not go about spreading corruption and immorality in this world

وَاَتَّقُواْ اُ۬لَّذِي خَلَقَكُمۡ وَاَلۡجِبِلَّةَ اَ۬لۡأَوَّلِينَ

And fear the One Who created you as well as the earlier generations

قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مِنَ اَ۬لۡمُسَحَّرِينَ

They said, "You are one of the crazed men

وَمَآ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُنَا وَإِن نَّظُنُّكَ لَمِنَ اَ۬لۡكَٰذِبِينَ

You are only a human being like us. We definitely think of you as a liar

فَأَسۡقِطۡ عَلَيۡنَا كِسۡفࣰ ا مِّنَ اَ۬لسَّمَآ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ اَ۬لصَّٰدِقِينَ

Or else, if you are telling the truth, cause a part of the sky to fall upon us

قَالَ رَبِّيَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ

(The messenger, Shoaib) said, "My Lord is Aware of what you are doing

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمۡ عَذَابُ يَوۡمِ اِ۬لظُّلَّةِۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَذَابَ يَوۡمٍ عَظِيمٍ

Thus, they rejected him. So, the punishment of the day of canopy (when dark clouds spread across like a canopy) grabbed them. It really was the punishment of a terrible day

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَأٓيَةࣰۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ

There is surely a sign in this, but most of them do not believe

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهۡوَ اَ۬لۡعَزِيزُ اُ۬لرَّحِيمُ

And your Lord is surely the One Who is the most Powerful and the most Merciful

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَنزِيلُ رَبِّ اِ۬لۡعَٰلَمِينَ

This (Qur´an) is truly the revelation of the Lord of the universe

نَزَلَ بِهِ اِ۬لرُّوحُ اُ۬لۡأَمِينُ

The reliable and the loyal angel brought it (and revealed it)

عَلَىٰ قَلۡبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ اَ۬لۡمُنذِرِينَ

To your heart! So you may serve as a warner

بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِيࣲّ مُّبِينࣲ‏

It is in a plain and pristine Arabic language

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَفِي زُبُرِ اِ۬لۡأَوَّلِينَ

Indeed, that (very same message) exists in the scriptures of the earlier people

أَوَلَمۡ يَكُن لَّهُمۡ ءَايَةً أَن يَعۡلَمَهُۥ عُلَمَٰٓؤُاْ بَنِيٓ إِسۡرَٰٓءِيلَ

And is it not a sufficient sign for them that (some of) the scholars of the Israelites also recognize it

وَلَوۡ نَزَّلۡنَٰهُ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضِ اِ۬لۡأَعۡجَمِينَ

Even if We had revealed this (Arabic Qur´an) upon a non-Arab

فَقَرَأَهُۥ عَلَيۡهِم مَّا كَانُواْ بِهِۦ مُؤۡمِنِينَ

And even if that non-Arab was to recite it to them (in Arabic), they would still not believe

كَذَٰلِكَ سَلَكۡنَٰهُ فِي قُلُوبِ اِ۬لۡمُجۡرِمِينَ

Thus, We lance this (Qur´an) through the hearts of the criminals

لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦ حَتَّىٰ يَرَوُاْ اُ۬لۡعَذَابَ اَ۬لۡأَلِيمَ

They will not believe, right until they see that painful punishment

فَيَأۡتِيَهُم بَغۡتَةࣰ وَهُمۡ لَا يَشۡعُرُونَ

Come upon them suddenly! They will not see it coming

فَيَقُولُواْ هَلۡ نَحۡنُ مُنظَرُونَ

Then they shall begin saying, "May we have some respite

أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا يَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ

Are they urging for Our punishment to be hastened

۞أَفَرَءَيۡتَ إِن مَّتَّعۡنَٰهُمۡ سِنِينَ

Have you given it a thought? (Even) if We let them enjoy (life) for years

ثُمَّ جَآءَهُم مَّا كَانُواْ يُوعَدُونَ

And then the promised punishment comes to them

مَآ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُم مَّا كَانُواْ يُمَتَّعُونَ

Would the years they spend in enjoyment be of any use to them

وَمَآ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَرۡيَةٍ إِلَّا لَهَا مُنذِرُونَ

We never destroy any town unless it had a warner

ذِكۡر۪يٰ وَمَا كُنَّا ظَٰلِمِينَ

A reminder! We are never unjust

وَمَا تَنَزَّلَتۡ بِهِ اِ۬لشَّيَٰطِينُ

It isn´t the Shaitans (the Devils) who came down with it _ (the Qur´an)

وَمَا يَنۢبَغِي لَهُمۡ وَمَا يَسۡتَطِيعُونَ

They are not worthy of it. Nor are they able (to do it)

إِنَّهُمۡ عَنِ اِ۬لسَّمۡعِ لَمَعۡزُولُونَ

Indeed, they are kept too far away to be able to hear it

فَلَا تَدۡعُ مَعَ اَ۬للَّهِ إِلَٰهًا ءَاخَرَ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ اَ۬لۡمُعَذَّبِينَ

Therefore, do not call any god along with Allah. Else, you will be among those being punished

وَأَنذِرۡ عَشِيرَتَكَ اَ۬لۡأَقۡرَبِينَ

Warn your closest relatives

وَاَخۡفِضۡ جَنَاحَكَ لِمَنِ اِ۪تَّبَعَكَ مِنَ اَ۬لۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

And be kind to the believers who obey you

فَإِنۡ عَصَوۡكَ فَقُلۡ إِنِّي بَرِيٓءࣱ مِّمَّا تَعۡمَلُونَ

Should they disobey you, say, "Surely, I bear no blame for what you are doing

وَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى اَ۬لۡعَزِيزِ اِ۬لرَّحِيمِ

And place your trust in the most Powerful and the most Kind

اِ۬لَّذِي يَر۪ىٰكَ حِينَ تَقُومُ

The One Who watches you when you stand (in prayers)

وَتَقَلُّبَكَ فِي اِ۬لسَّٰجِدِينَ

And (watches) your movements among those who fall prostrate (along with you in prayers)

إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ اَ۬لسَّمِيعُ اُ۬لۡعَلِيمُ

Indeed, it is He Who sees-all and knows-all

هَلۡ أُنَبِّئُكُمۡ عَلَىٰ مَن تَنَزَّلُ اُ۬لشَّيَٰطِينُ

Shall I point out to you those upon whom the Shaitans _ (the devils) _ land

تَنَزَّلُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِيمࣲ‏

They descend upon all the lying sinners

يُلۡقُونَ اَ۬لسَّمۡعَ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ كَٰذِبُونَ

And (they) feed them heresies; Most of them are liars

وَاَلشُّعَرَآءُ يَتَّبِعُهُمُ اُ۬لۡغَاوُۥنَ

As for the poets, only the misguided ones heed them

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّهُمۡ فِي كُلِّ وَادࣲ يَهِيمُونَ

Do you not see? These poets dabble in every subject and meander about with every thought

وَأَنَّهُمۡ يَقُولُونَ مَا لَا يَفۡعَلُونَ

They do not practice what they proclaim

إِلَّا اَ۬لَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ اُ۬لصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَذَكَرُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ كَثِيرࣰ ا وَاَنتَصَرُواْ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا ظُلِمُواْۗ وَسَيَعۡلَمُ اُ۬لَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوٓاْ أَيَّ مُنقَلَبࣲ يَنقَلِبُونَ

Except those who believe, perform good deeds, remember Allah a lot, and seek and redress only if they are unjustly wronged. Very soon the oppressors will come to know the means and manners by which they will be toppled
